Get Emo and Get Real
Emotions are energy in motion: We sense them, radiate them, motivate, and navigate with them. Emotions tell us what to do and how to be and communicate how we are and what we need. When they are noticed and valued, we feel supported, respected, and confident. That is how life is supposed to be, but often isn’t: Many of us become confused and inhibited when other people ignore our emotions and train us to doubt our value. By ignoring how we feel, they signal us that we are unacceptable and need to act in specific ways to become acceptable again—by figuring out and doing what they want.
This strategy keeps us self-doubting, off-balance, constantly sending them energy, dependent on their signals, and doing what they want—instead of doing what is good for us. It pushes us into invisible roles and rules about who we can be and what we can do. They steal, then hide, the options a supported and respected person would have. We become entrapped in what they want from us and how they want us to be. They may never realize or admit that they do it, but it is up to us to reset ourselves.
The remedy is simple: Have experiences that make you happy and help you like yourself, where your emotions are noticed and valued, your honesty is wanted, and someone helps you take up as much emotional space as you need—Get Emo and Get Real. As soon as you realize how good that feels, you will stop playing small. As soon as you realize you are worth supporting, your loyalty to yourself will get steadily stronger and you will stop making others’ signals so important.
Emo Real is an experiential education workflow for getting positive reflection, resetting self-perception, and choosing what is good for you until you are good at it. It is a structured situation where having your emotions and their intelligence valued resets your self-value, and where designing and directing journeys of positive connection makes you aware of your positive options again. Being in a professional friendship centered on valuing you where your feelings are noticed and obeyed and your decisions direct the interaction steadily expands your comfort, confidence, and authority.
Sessions start with discussing where you are in your life and what you are ready to let go of, strengthen, and welcome in. Being listened to with total attention and empathy helps you feel valued. Once you feel understood, accepted, and appreciated, you relax as a being. You then design and direct a journey supporting you by picking from a menu with different kinds of touch. For having emotions and being honest you receive what comforts you and shows you that you are valued in a flavor that is right for you.
The journey follows your plan with you occasionally clarifying what is good for you using hand signals for yes and no if you are too relaxed to speak. This enables you to make changes, ensures you are getting what is right for you at all times, and reminds you that you are safe and in control. Your responsibilities when you are relaxing are small, but you agree to stay comfortable and only be uncomfortable for a minute before saying or signaling something—like if you have to go to the bathroom. Identifying your preferences and giving them over and over helps you break the pattern of trying to please others, of doing what you think they want, or of suffering for them. In many cases, you will stay comfortable and not have to say or signal anything the whole time, but your preferences will be asked for, just so you know they are wanted.
Having someone consistently notice and respond to your emotions without you saying anything reminds you they are loud enough to notice, and that someone who is connected with you and wants to support you can. Relaxing into trust and comfort this way, a second time, as a body as well as a being, resets you: Feeling valued, connected, and respected becomes a realistic life option. You now know what it feels like. Building an emotional connection successfully through talk then touch, operating from your own emotional signal, and radiating emotions safely and with positive results opens the door to a life where you honor your own feelings, other people respect you, and purely positive experiences happen.
